This post very special moments during my visiting small city called “Spišská Kapitula”.
Spišská Kapitula (sometimes also referred to as: Slovak Vatican; Latin Capitulum Scepusiense, German Zipser Kapitel, German Szepeshely or Szepes Kaptalan) was a church town and is still the seat of the Spiš bishop and the center of the Spiš diocese. Today it is part of the city of Spišské Podhradie. Spišská Kapitula was once an independent village in eastern Slovakia in the Hornádská kotlina. In the 11th century, a monastery, probably founded by Benedictines, stood near the Spišská Kapitula. The emergence of the Spišská Kapitula is probably related to the founding of the Spiš prefectural office at the end of the 12th century. The first written mention comes from 1235.
The Romanesque Cathedral of St. Martin from 1245 – 1273 is located here. In the 13th century, the so-called chapter school, from the middle of the 17th century a Jesuit gymnasium. Until the 18th century, many rulers and provosts of Spiš made efforts to raise the provostship to a bishopric. This plan was only successful in 1776 during the reign of Maria Theresa, when the presbytery was elevated to a bishopric and since then it has been the seat of the church administration of Spiš, Liptov and Orava.
Spišská Kapitula was one of the centers of church education in Slovakia. In the years 1819 – 1950, the first Slovak and Hungarian institute for the education of primary school teachers existed here. In the years 1815-1849 there was a theological school here. In 1948, Spišská Kapitula was annexed to the city of Spišské Podhradie, and two years later it was declared a city monument reserve. Since 1993, Levoča, Spiš Castle and surrounding monuments have been included in the UNESCO List.
