Morské oko, formerly called Veľké Vihorlatské jazero, is the largest lake in Vihorlatské vrchy and the third largest natural lake in Slovakia after Štrbské pleso and Veľký Hincovy pleso in the High Tatras. It is one of the most beautiful still lifes in Slovakia, which has preserved its romance and natural charm.
The formation of the Sea Eye falls into the period of decay of volcanic activity in Vihorlat. A massive landslide from the eastern slope of Motrogon and Jedlinka blocked the valley of the Okna stream, and a natural lake was created behind the barrier. The sea eye is exceptional in its origin, location, physico-chemical and biological regime. It lies below the Sninský kameň (1,006.0 m above sea level) in the cadastral area of the municipalities of Remetské Hámre and Vyšná Rybnica, at an altitude of 618 m above sea level. m. Today’s appearance of the lake has existed since the eighties of the 19th century, when an artificial dam wall was built. About 7 ha of lake area after increasing the water level by 5 m created today’s area of 13.8 ha. The maximum length of the lake is 750 m and width 312 m. The lake reaches a depth of up to 25.1 m.
It is located in the Vihorlat Protected Landscape Area and belongs to the protection zone of the Vihorlat Forest, abbreviated to Vihorlat, which was inscribed on the UNESCO World Natural Heritage List in 2007 in the Carpathian beech forests category. The reason for registration was preserved beech forests with more than 240-year-old specimens. The category was later expanded several times by other localities and is now called Old Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe. At the same time, it belongs to the Morské oko locality (SKUEV0209), which is an area of European importance of the Natura 2000 system.
In sum, 6 permanent springs and several periodic springs flow into the lake. Excess water from the lake is drained by the Okna stream. The coast is very rugged. Its western and northern parts have a slight slope and are covered with fine sand. The east bank is steep and rocky. The deeper parts of the lake are covered with a thick layer of mud. Leaves accumulate near the tributaries, from which methane is released all year round.
The sea eye is a great natural feature of Slovak nature. To protect natural values and beauties, the lake, together with the surrounding forests, was declared a state nature reserve in 1984, currently it is a national nature reserve with a total area of 108.48 ha, where the highest 5th degree of protection applies. Fishing, swimming and boating are prohibited.
